Jr. Girls Continue Undefeated Season

Waterford Jr. Girls Lacrosse team improved to a 3-0-1 record in games 3 & 4 of their 5-Saturday, 10-game, 2007 season. Jr. Girls began the day with a 7 – 7 tie against perennial powerhouse Juan Diego in game 1, and culminated with a 9 – 8 victory over host Riverton in game 2 of Saturday’s back-to-back, double-header in summer-like conditions.

Game 1 proved just seconds too long for Waterford as Juan Diego found an attacker open on the doorstep for a quick feed and score to tie the game in the final seconds. Rookie Laura Wilson made her first start in goal with a handful of acrobatic saves to keep the low-scoring first half in check. Both teams opened-up the second half scoring with Waterford leading until the final seconds. Midfielder and competitive figure-skater Erin Orchard showed her moves on decidedly un-frozen ground with 3 tallies, and was denied the winning goal with a fortunate foot-save by the Juan Diego keep late in the game on a hard shot from the top of the crease. Middie Nancy Linford matched Erin’s 3 and continued to dazzle with fancy quick-sticks down in low. Hailey Schiff rounded out the scoring with a single dinger.

Waterford showed their mettle in rebounding from game 1’s disconcerting tie to win game 2 of the double-header against host Riverton. Both teams came out firing in the summer-like heat with middies Hailey Schiff scoring 5, Erin Orchard 2 and Payton Schiff 1. Veteran attacker Gaby Regenhardt jumped on the scoring sheet for the first time this season with a bullet from the side of the 8. Keeper Emma Wall proved her name apt as she repeatedly denied Riverton on direct free position shots deep in the penalty lane and cleared her saves with pinpoint passing. Defenders Estie Pyper, Monica Barton, Portia Cao and Laura Wilson put their game faces on and stood up to Riverton’s formidable attack to keep it close.

Offensive rookies showed great poise handling the ball against 2 rugged opponents. Standouts included Olivia Winters with her first midfield duty and shot-on-goal, and Miklain Huntsman outgunning her defenders to control a number of ground balls. Rookies Sydney Horne and Abbie Simons continued to share midfield/attack duties with support by veteran attackers Rachel Kamradt, Sarah Linford and Catherine Coats.
