Jr. Girls Lacrosse Opens Season With 2 Wins
4/21/07 – Waterford Jr. Girls made a statement with 2 wins to open the 2007 season. Waterford doubled-up Murray 10 to 5 in the opener, then squeezed by West 9 to 8 in the final minute to take the back-to-back second game as well.
After a month of practice in conditions from balmy to blizzard, the Jr. girls created their own opening day blizzard by coming out and dominating Murray in a convincing 10 to 5 win. Scoring was carried by middies Hailey Schiff posting 4 tallies, Payton Schiff backing up her sister with 3, veterans Erin Orchard with 2 and Nancy Linford with 1. Vets were assisted by rookie midfielder Abbie Simons, returning attackers Rachel Kamradt, Sarah Linford, and rookie Sydney Horne.
Game 2 started a bit lower scoring against a strong opponent in West with the score tied at 2 at the half. Waterford girls showed some effects of their first back-to-back game in the second half as West pulled away to a 7 to 4 lead midway through the period. Jr. Girls showed their grit by pulling even at 8 late in the game, then taking their first and deciding lead with a dramatic drive down the lane and goal by Hailey Schiff inside the final minute. Midfield again led the scoring with Hailey Schiff tallying 6, Nancy Linford 2 and Erin Orchard 1.
Scoring highlights included Nancy Linford’s one-timers from inside the 8 with pretty, behind-the-goal feeds from Hailey Schiff & Erin Orchard. Defensive standouts included solid play by stalwart keeper Emma Wall in goal. Emma and veteran Estie Pyper hollered out orders and kept tenacious rookie defenders Monica Barton, Jessica Cowley, Laura Wilson and Portia Cao in the flow. Solid play was rounded out and contributed by all including veterans Catherine Coats, Gaby Regenhardt, and rookies Olivia Winters, Miklain Huntsman and Lexi Gordon.
Head Coach Schiff acknowledges game management performed by Waterford Varsity girls/ Jr. assistant coaches Allie Hoffler in the offensive zone and Amelia Christensen and Kirsten Mika in the crease and defensive side.
Jr. Girls continue the season on Saturday, 4/28, with 12:00 and 1:30 back-to-back games against rivals Juan Diego and Riverton at Big Cottonwood Park.
